Taking the advantages of rhesus macaque as a model animal closely-related to human, we addressed the fundamental question of the genetic basis underlying human-specific traits.
Dr. Li’s lab addressed the fundamental question of the genetic basis underlying human-specific traits, with the interdisciplinary research of life science and information science. He introduced the cutting-edge information technologies into the field of non-human primate research to solve the major technical bottlenecks in the field, and developed the RhesusBase, a well-recognized system to support high-resolution mechanism and functional studies in Rhesus macaque. In the framework of RhesusBase, he identified an accurate list of human-specific genes and regulatory events, proposed new models on the origination and evolution of these new genetic elements, and experimentally verified the functions of two newly-originated de novo genes in human brain development. Overall, he published 21 articles as the corresponding authors on journals such as Nature Ecology & Evolution, PNAS and Science Advances, which were featured by journals such as Science. he was supported by the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars of China, and the top-notch young talents supporting program, and received multiple awards such as the "Bei Shizhang Young Biophysicist Award". His PhD students also received awards such as the well-recognized "Ray Wu Prize".
